{"id":786,"date":"2006-02-09T14:03:00","date_gmt":"2006-02-09T19:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=786"},"modified":"2006-02-09T14:03:00","modified_gmt":"2006-02-09T19:03:00","slug":"david-and-goliath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=786","title":{"rendered":"David and Goliath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re now getting word that &#8220;non-partisan&#8221; David Emerson helped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/NASApp\/cs\/ContentServer?pagename=thestar\/Layout\/Article_Type1&#038;c=Article&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;cid=1139439013294&#038;call_pageid=968332188492&amp;col=968793972154&amp;t=TS_Home\">delay a softwood lumber deal <\/a>with the United States for partisan reasons. Sure, the Martin PMO helped, but we expect duplicity and incompetence from them so their role in this isn&#8217;t really news.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, I have a hard time believing that this was part of some Machiavellian plan on Emerson&#8217;s part (OMG! Was <em>he <\/em>the mole?!?!) but, once again, the optics aren&#8217;t good. It certainly reveals that Emerson was willing to &#8220;play politics&#8221; (leaving the saint among men, Jack Layton, as the only politician left refusing to &#8220;play politics&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>And now that the Liberals, in a completely out of character move, have <em>leaked<\/em> the deal, it&#8217;s going to make it hard for Emerson to sign the same deal. Further compounding his difficulties in negotiating a deal would be <a href=\"http:\/\/andrewcoyne.com\/2006\/02\/minister-of-nothing-to-do-with-canfor.php\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All that aside, most worrisome is the fact that the PMO felt it would <em>help <\/em>their re-election campaign by <em>not <\/em>having a deal with the US on softwood. I mean, why sign a deal to help the softwood industry when you can take cheap shots at George Bush for seven weeks?
