{"id":3894,"date":"2012-08-08T14:58:46","date_gmt":"2012-08-08T18:58:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=3894"},"modified":"2012-08-09T13:46:12","modified_gmt":"2012-08-09T17:46:12","slug":"stephen-harper-finds-science-on-the-road-the-damascus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=3894","title":{"rendered":"Stephen Harper Finds Science on the Road to Damascus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s Stephen Harper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/story\/2012\/08\/07\/pol-gateway-tuesday-harper-bc.html\">doing his best<\/a> to stay out of the Enbridge pipeline debate &#8211; the biggest (non-soccer) controversy in Canada these days:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Prime Minister Stephen Harper is defending the independence of the environmental review process underway for Enbridge&#8217;s Northern Gateway pipeline, telling reporters in Vancouver the project will be evaluated scientifically and a green light to proceed would not be based on politics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Decisions on these kinds of projects are made through an independent evaluation conducted by scientists into the economic costs and risks that are associated with the project<\/strong>. And that&#8217;s how we conduct our business,&#8221; Harper said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The only way that governments can handle controversial projects of this manner is to ensure that things are evaluated on an independent basis scientifically and not simply on political criteria,&#8221; the prime minister added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While this is a perfectly reasonable position for Harper to take, it&#8217;s also unexpected. After all, the <em>Stephen Harper Amish Drinking Game<\/em> has &#8220;science&#8221; in the centre square &#8211; it&#8217;s simply not a word that ever crosses his lips.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Harper&#8217;s conversion to science does seem to have more to do with convenience than faith when you consider his government came to power thanks to a GST cut <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/story\/canadavotes2006\/national\/2005\/12\/01\/gst-reac051201.html\">economists everywhere<\/a> hated. It&#8217;s the same government that killed the long-form Census over howls of protests from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2709\"><em>every single<\/em> expert<\/a> (other than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=3239\">noted censologist<\/a> Lorne Gunter) &#8211; then cut <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/politics\/just-days-after-harpers-budget-the-axe-begins-to-fall\/article4097162\/\">Statistics Canada&#8217;s budget<\/a> to rub salt in the wound. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2195\">Minister of Science<\/a> doesn&#8217;t believe in evolution. Don&#8217;t even bother bringing up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canada.com\/health\/Create+safe+injection+sites+Ottawa+Toronto+Study\/6441830\/story.html\">safe injection sites<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/politics\/article\/1150501--noted-scientists-warn-stephen-harper-against-fisheries-act-changes\">fisheries act<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/background\/harper_conservatives\/pdf\/lettertoharper2.pdf\">climate change<\/a>.
