{"id":3086,"date":"2011-07-11T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-11T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=3086"},"modified":"2011-07-11T18:00:00","modified_gmt":"2011-07-11T22:00:00","slug":"about-that-liberal-arrogance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=3086","title":{"rendered":"About that Liberal Arrogance&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I remember a time, 5 or 6 years ago, when a young Stephen Harper was <em>aghast <\/em>that Paul Martin would have the nerve to suggest Liberal values were more Canadian than Conservative values. Young Harper railed against &#8220;Liberal arrogance&#8221; every chance he got.<\/p>\n<p>Now?<\/p>\n<p>Harper spends his time <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.macleans.ca\/2011\/07\/11\/five-wrongs-do-make-a-right-honourable\">predicting his opponents&#8217; demise<\/a>, and telling Canadians &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservative.ca\/press\/news_releases\/prime_minister_stephen_harper_s_2011_convention_speech\">the Conservative Party is Canada&#8217;s Party<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; he actually called them the &#8220;natural governing party&#8221; in one interview, though even Harper later recognized that may have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.macleans.ca\/2011\/07\/05\/how-he-sees-canada%E2%80%99s-role-in-the-world-and-where-he-wants-to-take-the-country\/\">poor choice of words<\/a>. He is, however, confident that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/opposition-mps-say-harpers-arrogance-will-come-back-to-haunt-him\/article2092763\"><em>Conservative values are Canadian values and Canadian values are conservative values<\/em><\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all very good for Harper to enjoy his win. And I <em>get <\/em>that he&#8217;s trying to undue years of the Liberal Party stiching its logo to the flag at every opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>But he&#8217;ll be coming up on a decade in power by the next election. That&#8217;s usually when Canadians hand governments their walking papers if they start looking even the least bit arrogant.
