{"id":2983,"date":"2011-04-24T17:03:00","date_gmt":"2011-04-24T21:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2983"},"modified":"2012-05-29T16:58:55","modified_gmt":"2012-05-29T20:58:55","slug":"like-jean-lapierre-before-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2983","title":{"rendered":"Like Jean Lapierre Before Him&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;Gilles Duceppe is desperately trying to turn this into an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/canadavotes2011\/story\/2011\/04\/23\/cv-election-bloc-ndp.html#\">election referendum<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\"><strong>Election a federalist-sovereignist battle: Duceppe<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois Leader Gilles Duceppe appears to be escalating his party&#8217;s message amid a dramatic drop in poll numbers, saying the election is not a &#8220;left-right&#8221; battle, but a &#8220;fight between the federalists and the sovereignists.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">Duceppe made the statement in a Twitter post on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This follows <a href=\"http:\/\/calgarygrit.blogspot.com\/2011\/04\/party-like-its-1995.html\">yesterday&#8217;s announcement<\/a> that Jacques Parizeau will be joining Duceppe on the campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p>There are two obvious problems with this strategy:<\/p>\n<p>1. Duceppe has spent the past decade arguing that federal elections are NOT about sovereignty; and<\/p>\n<p>2.He&#8217;s been right.<\/p>\n<p>As the Liberals learned in 2006, Quebecers understand that federal elections aren&#8217;t referendums.
