Here&#8217;s what was in the news this week:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/politics\/the-undeclared-federal-election-campaign-of-inches-begins\/article1869663\/\">Election speculation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/news\/Opinion+Ignatieff+says+election+ready\/4107105\/story.html\">election speculation<\/a>, and more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cottagecountrynow.ca\/news\/elections\/article\/928072--speculation-over-spring-election\">election speculation<\/a>. Harper may or may not be trying to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/opinions\/opinion\/why-stephen-harper-will-trigger-a-spring-election\/article1867837\">engineer his own defeat<\/a> (be sure to check off &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/thestar.blogs.com\/politics\/2011\/01\/pm-sets-the-stage-for-an-election.html\">poison pill<\/a>&#8221; on your minority government bingo sheets), Ignatieff&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/politics\/ottawa-notebook\/tories-see-tour-as-proof-ignatieff-will-force-needless-election\/article1867312\/\">may or may<\/a> not bring him down, and Gilles Duceppe is <a href=\"http:\/\/montreal.ctv.ca\/servlet\/an\/local\/CTVNews\/20110111\/duceppe-might-vote-against-budget-110111\/20110111\/?hub=MontrealHome\">asking to be bought off<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>-Harper&#8217;s talking about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpost.com\/news\/Harper+warns+opposition+coalition+sets+sights+party+subsidies\/4099639\/story.html\">scrapping public subsidies <\/a>&#8211; which we&#8217;ve known would be in his next election platform since&#8230;oh, I don&#8217;t know&#8230;2008. And he&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalpost.com\/2011\/01\/12\/interview-stephen-harper\/\">warning about a coalition<\/a>. We get it. <em>Socialists<\/em>! <em>Separatists<\/em>! They&#8217;ll <em>destroy<\/em> Canada.<\/p>\n<p>-Quebec, who have <em>only<\/em> goten 40% of military contracts so far, feels its not getting its <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=fr&amp;u=http:\/\/www.ledevoir.com\/politique\/canada\/314668\/retombees-economiques-militaires-le-quebec-n-obtient-pas-sa-juste-part&amp;prev=\/search%3Fq%3Dhttp:\/\/www.ledevoir.com\/%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3D1B3%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26prmd%3Divns&amp;rurl=translate.google.com\">fair share<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>-Even the polls, always a good source of faux excitement, were as typical as can be this week. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/politics\/story\/2011\/01\/13\/ekos-poll-jan14.html\">Tories up by 7<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.angus-reid.com\/polls\/43747\/conservatives-drop-back-lead-liberals-by-six-points-in-canada\/\">Tories up by 6<\/a>.
