{"id":2672,"date":"2010-06-07T08:48:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-07T12:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2672"},"modified":"2010-06-07T08:48:00","modified_gmt":"2010-06-07T12:48:00","slug":"coalition-if-necessary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2672","title":{"rendered":"Coalition if Necessary&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This seems perfectly reasonable to me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/politics\/ignatieff-willing-to-lead-coalition-but-talk-of-merger-with-ndp-is-absurd\/article1593791\/\"><span style=\"font-family:arial;\"><strong>Ignatieff willing to lead coalition, but talk of merger with NDP is \u2018absurd\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:arial;\"><\/p>\n<p>Michael Ignatieff says coalition governments are \u201cperfectly legitimate\u201d and he&#8217;d be prepared to lead one if that&#8217;s the hand Canadian voters deal him in the next election.<\/p>\n<p>But the Liberal Leader says it would be disrespectful to voters and damaging to his party to try to strike any deals with the NDP before voters have spoken.<\/p>\n<p>In an exclusive interview with The Canadian Press, Mr. Ignatieff dismissed talk of a merger or any sort of election non-compete agreement with the NDP as \u201cabsurd.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve said before, there&#8217;s nothing inherently wrong about coalitions. Say the Bloc collapsed and we get a parliament that looks like this:<\/p>\n<p>CPC 123<br \/>Lib 120<br \/>NDP 35<br \/>BQ 30<\/p>\n<p>Now say the Liberals <em>won<\/em> the popular vote. Surely then, a Liberal-NDP coalition would make a lot of sense. There&#8217;s no point in ruling it out categorically beforehand because, by ruling it out, you&#8217;d be robing it its legitimacy.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully this will end all the coalition and merger talk for a while.
