{"id":2608,"date":"2010-03-28T15:45:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-28T19:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2608"},"modified":"2010-03-28T15:45:00","modified_gmt":"2010-03-28T19:45:00","slug":"two-paths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2608","title":{"rendered":"Two Paths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The big news out of Ignatieff&#8217;s closing speech from the Canada150 conference is his pledge to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberal.ca\/en\/newsroom\/media-releases\/17809_michael-ignatieff-sets-out-fiscally-responsible-approach-to-invest-in-canadas-priorities\">overturn scheduled cuts to the corporate tax rate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m trying to find the exact figures, but I believe that would boost government revenue by <strike><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/article\/770566--analysis-jim-flaherty-s-sacred-cows-corporate-tax-cuts\">10-15 billion a year<\/a><\/strike> 5-6 billion a year (not taking into account any lost productivity). That&#8217;s not small change, and it answers the question of how the Liberals will be able to promise program spending and deficit reduction. And it&#8217;s certainly a lot easier to sell than an income tax or GST hike (<em>or, ahem, a carbon tax<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>So there you have the crux of the next election. The Conservatives will promise they&#8217;re good for business and the economy. The Liberals will promise spending initiatives and deficit reduction. As far as ideological clashes go, that&#8217;s not a bad debate to have.
