{"id":246,"date":"2005-02-03T02:36:00","date_gmt":"2005-02-03T07:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=246"},"modified":"2005-02-03T02:36:00","modified_gmt":"2005-02-03T07:36:00","slug":"246","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=246","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Trimming Government Fat<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20050201.wxhfitness01\/BNStory\/specialScienceandHealth\/\">This story <\/a>caught my eye, if only because it was one of the policies debated, and defeated on the final day at the Liberal convention last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>This is the type of thing I\u2019ve been in favour of for a long time. I really believe the tax code should be modified to reward healthy and environmentally sound choices and to punish poor ones. But after listening to the debate on the topic, I\u2019m now firmly against tax breaks for gym memberships. Why? Because it would amount to nothing more than a tax break for rich, white people. Let\u2019s face it, how many low income single mothers buy gym memberships? The best exercise can sometimes be a jog around the block (or, from my personal experience, running away from a mob of angry gun owners who\u2019ve spotted that Liberal sign on your front lawn).<\/p>\n<p>A fairer way to go about things would be to bring in a \u201cfat tax\u201d. Tax junk foods, fast foods, and fatty\/unhealthy foods.
