{"id":2320,"date":"2009-06-22T19:32:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-22T23:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2320"},"modified":"2009-06-22T19:32:00","modified_gmt":"2009-06-22T23:32:00","slug":"the-one-thing-worse-than-low-voter-turnout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2320","title":{"rendered":"The One Thing Worse Than Low Voter Turnout"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fivethirtyeight.com\/2009\/06\/worst-damage-control-ever.html\">Iran&#8217;s Guardian Council has admitted that the number of votes collected in 50 cities surpass the number of those eligible to cast ballot in those areas.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The council&#8217;s Spokesman Abbas-Ali <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">Kadkhodaei<\/span>, who was speaking on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">IRIB<\/span>) Channel 2 on Sunday, made the remarks in response to complaints filed by <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">Mohsen<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">Rezaei<\/span> &#8212; a defeated candidate in the June 12 Presidential election.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Statistics provided by <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\">Mohsen<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\">Rezaei<\/span> in which he claims more than 100% of those eligible have cast their ballot in 170 cities are not accurate &#8212; the incident has happened in only 50 cities,&#8221; <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\">Kadkhodaei<\/span> said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The spokesman, however, said that although the vote tally affected by such an irregularity is over 3 million, &#8220;it has yet to be determined whether the amount is decisive in the election results,&#8221; reported <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\">Khabaronline<\/span>. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ll admit I haven&#8217;t been following this story as closely as I should, what with it being overshadowed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/politics\/laureen-harper-comes-to-turtles-rescue\/article1190559\/\">Laureen Harper&#8217;s daring turtle rescue<\/a>, both in Canada and in the international press.<\/p>\n<p>But, by now, it&#8217;s abundantly obvious that the fraud was widespread enough to warrant a re-vote &#8211; one monitored by international agencies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iran&#8217;s Guardian Council has admitted that the number of votes collected in 50 cities surpass the number of those eligible to cast ballot in those areas.
