{"id":2251,"date":"2009-05-02T14:15:00","date_gmt":"2009-05-02T18:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2251"},"modified":"2009-05-02T14:15:00","modified_gmt":"2009-05-02T18:15:00","slug":"the-one-member-one-vote-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2251","title":{"rendered":"The One Member One Vote Vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">WOMOV<\/span> is in.<\/p>\n<p>The most hotly anticipated vote of the weekend just wrapped up, with the Liberal Party overwhelmingly rejecting the 25% youth quota <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">amendment<\/span> and deciding to adopt a weighted one member one vote leadership selection process. <a href=\"http:\/\/calgarygrit.blogspot.com\/2009\/04\/one-member-one-vote-several-opinions.html\">As I&#8217;ve argued before<\/a>, both of these decisions were the right ones to make, and I&#8217;m glad delegates voted the way they did.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the play-by-play.<\/p>\n<p>The supporters of the youth <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">amendment<\/span> had the buttons and pamphlets, but with a low youth turn-out at this convention (10-15% of delegates), the demographics weren&#8217;t in their favour for the vote. Opponents also played the microphone well, putting up Justin Trudeau and two young Liberals to speak <em>against<\/em> the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">amendment<\/span>, whereas there was not a single senior party member who spoke in favour of it. The <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\">amendment<\/span> was soundly rejected, by about 85% of those in the room, I&#8217;d estimate.<\/p>\n<p>On the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\">WOMOV<\/span> vote itself, Belinda <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\">Stronach<\/span> and Bob Rae spoke in favour of it &#8211; Bob really fired up the crowd and it was fairly obvious it would pass. Which it did, with a good 80% of the room in favour.<\/p>\n<p>So conventions just got a bit less fun, but the party just got a bit more democratic.
