{"id":2203,"date":"2009-03-23T22:10:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-24T02:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2203"},"modified":"2009-03-23T22:10:00","modified_gmt":"2009-03-24T02:10:00","slug":"the-yet-to-be-named-tory-race-to-replace-tory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=2203","title":{"rendered":"The yet to be named Tory race to replace Tory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20090322.wonttoriesleader0322\/BNStory\/politics\/home\">The Ontario PCs will select a new leader on June 27<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">th<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s more sniffing going on in this Tory leadership race than at an Andre <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">Boisclair<\/span><\/span> house party, with everyone and their wife sniffing around to gauge the lay of the land. I&#8217;ll admit that my understanding of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party is minimal &#8211; I know Mike Harris used to be Premier, that Ernie Eves delivered his budget in an auto plant a few years ago, and that John Tory doesn&#8217;t have a seat&#8230;that&#8217;s about it. So don&#8217;t expect a lot of insightful coverage of the race from this blog. With that in mind, here&#8217;s my <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">un<\/span><\/span>-insightful look at the field so far.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diane Finley<\/strong>: For those of you unfamiliar with her (I&#8217;m looking at you, <em>everyone<\/em>), she&#8217;s married to Harper strategist Doug Finlay, and wears sunglasses [UPDATE: <em>used to!<\/em>] in the House of Commons. Finley has been relatively untouched by scandal and charges of incompetence, making her one of Stephen Harper&#8217;s better ministers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peter Van Loan<\/strong>: Based on my limited knowledge of the field, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">PVL<\/span><\/span> would be my early pick as their &#8220;best choice&#8221;. He&#8217;d bring the fire, has experienced, and scores fairly low on the &#8220;scary scale&#8221;. Seeing him go head to head with &#8220;the small man of confederation&#8221; would be a lot of fun too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tim <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\">Hudak<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: Tim is the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\">frontrunner<\/span><\/span> in this race, which means that he pretty much has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepeterboroughexaminer.com\/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1467662&amp;auth=JONATHAN%20JENKINS,%20SUN%20MEDIA\">it<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Ignatieff#Leadership_bid\">in<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Dinning\">the<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\">bag<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joinrudy2008.com\/\">right<\/a>? All I really know about the man is that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/News\/Ontario\/article\/604018\">Mike Harris<\/a> has endorsed him, and he ran the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/74.125.95.132\/search?q=cache:1f1Mj6nNoLMJ:https:\/\/www.timhudak.ca\/great-dominion-dust+tim+hudak+dominion+dust+up&amp;cd=1&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk\">Great Dominion Dust Up<\/a>&#8221; bracketed poll on his blog to find Canada&#8217;s most inspiring politician (<a href=\"http:\/\/calgarygrit.blogspot.com\/2005\/09\/and-winner-is.html\">sound<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/calgarygrit.blogspot.com\/2006\/09\/stanfield-fumbles-preston-wins.html\">familiar<\/a>?) a few years back, that Louis Riel won. Go figure. While no one will mistake <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\">Hudak<\/span><\/span> for Canada&#8217;s most inspiring politician, the real question is whether he&#8217;s the most inspiring of this bunch, or not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tony Clement<\/strong>: Hasn&#8217;t lost a leadership race recently, so you just know he&#8217;s itching to once again experience the thrill of defeat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christine Elliott<\/strong>: Seems like a solid candidate, although controlling Jim &#8220;last place to invest&#8221; <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\">Flaherty<\/span><\/span> could be a tougher challenge than Hillary had of muzzling Bill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Randy Hillier<\/strong>: Would be an entertaining addition to the race, in the same way Craig Chandler was an entertaining addition to the 2003 PC leadership race.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Julian <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_8\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_8\">Fantino<\/span><\/span><\/strong>: Currently, Ontario&#8217;s Provincial Police Commissioner so he&#8217;d have to find a seat if he won the leadership. But, hey, how hard could that be?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>UPDATE:<\/em><\/strong> The Globe lets some PC strategists weigh in on &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20090324.WPCPanel24\/BNStory\/politics\/home\">life after Tory<\/a>&#8220;. For the record, I agree with Jaime Watt that running the Harris playbook again would be a big mistake for them. The Tories need to position themselves as a centrist party and then just pound <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_9\">McGuinty<\/span> into the ground on the economy. The federal Conservatives won Ontario last election, so it shouldn&#8217;t be too hard for them to figure out where to target their resources and who will be a part of their winning coalition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ontario PCs will select a new leader on June 27th.
