Dr. Tom is the latest to jump on the &#8220;death of Conservatism&#8221;\/&#8221;Right wing uprising&#8221; train, in this Globe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20090130.wcoharper02\/BNStory\/specialComment\/home\">op-ed<\/a>. While there <em>might<\/em> be a fundraising backlash, I wouldn&#8217;t expect any of this to hurt Harper at the polls. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestrategiccounsel.com\/our_news\/polls\/2009-01-30%20GMCTV%20--%20Final.pdf\">this poll<\/a> (page 35), only 1% of Conservative voters are less likely to vote Tory because of the budget.<\/p>\n<p>And having a few right wingers go on rants that Harper &#8220;<em>isn&#8217;t conservative enough<\/em>&#8221; may not be a bad thing for the guy&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>2. Speaking of fundraising, the <a href=\"http:\/\/punditsguide.ca\/2009\/02\/conservatives-raise-record-212-million.php\">latest numbers are out<\/a>. While there is some mild encouragement in Q4 for the Liberals, it&#8217;s abundantly obvious why Harper would love to do away with the public funding of political parties.<\/p>\n<p>3. There&#8217;s a lot of buzz over this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/01\/fashion\/01ignatieff.html?_r=2&amp;ref=style\">&#8220;fawning&#8221; profile<\/a> of Michael <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">Ignatieff<\/span> in the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>4. Tom Clark has won the <a href=\"http:\/\/calgarygrit.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/who-wants-to-be-ctv-host.html\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">CTV<\/span> <em>On the Hill<\/em> &#8220;host race&#8221;. <\/a>Clark is promising that on <strike>Mike Duffy Live<\/strike> <strike>On The Hill<\/strike> Power Play &#8220;anyone who tries to use spin is going to be in for a rather unpleasant surprise&#8221;, which is a bold promise to make for a show made up mostly of spin doctor <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">panel segments<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>5. Although I didn&#8217;t get a chance to see the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">OYL<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\">hijinx<\/span> first hand, I&#8217;d just like to offer a hearty congratulations to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/www.davidvalentin.ca\">David Valentin<\/a> (and Alex Crombie) who ran, and won, as independents &#8211; always a challenging thing to accomplish in youth politics.<\/p>\n<p>6. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.macleans.ca\/2009\/02\/02\/nato-mackays-atlantic-gateway\/\">The latest<\/a> on the Peter <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\">MacKay<\/span> for NATO secretary general rumours.<a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_L6NW1UySEKs\/SYd9kI7TmII\/AAAAAAAABHc\/uVC1j8b86dw\/s1600-h\/Harper_Dance.jpg\"> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>7. Four Newfoundland Liberals have broken ranks and will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20090202.wPOLnewf0202\/BNStory\/politics\/home\">vote against Harper&#8217;s budget<\/a>. It would be hard for Ignatieff to punish his MPs for voting <em>against<\/em> a budget he has been less than enamoured with himself &#8211; especially if he hopes to hang on to the 6 Newfoundland seats the party holds.
