From my vantage point, this one seems about as meaningful as your typical trip to the polls in Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, here are some random thoughts on tonight&#8217;s debate, transcribed as I (kind of) watch it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:08 pm: <\/strong>Pauline <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">Marois<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> takes her first two times speaking to complain about <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">Charest<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> calling a snap election. It&#8217;s a bad sign when, come the debates, you&#8217;re still hung up on that and have <em>nothing relevant<\/em> <em>to talk about.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>8:09 pm:<\/strong> Mario <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">Dumont<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> came right out in his opening statement promising mixed public\/private health care&#8230;and he goes right back to it again now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:11 pm:<\/strong> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">Charest<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> asks <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\">Dumont<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> where he&#8217;d cut the 2 billion he&#8217;s promising to cut. <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\">Dumont<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>&#8230;doesn&#8217;t answer the question. I vaguely recall an exchange like this hurting <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\">Dumont<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> during the last election.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:24 pm:<\/strong> It&#8217;s interesting to see so much talk about health care, considering how thoroughly that topic was ignored during the federal election.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:30 pm:<\/strong> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\">Dumont<\/span><\/span>: &#8220;<em>when we all go back to the legislature, our parties will work together<\/em>&#8220;. Well, that&#8217;s assuming there are <em>three <\/em>parties that actually wind up going back to the legislature&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:42 pm:<\/strong> Is it just me, or does anyone else wish Jack Layton were here so that we could hear more about the kitchen table issues facing <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_8\">Quebecers<\/span>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:46 pm:<\/strong> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_9\">Marois<\/span>: &#8220;The only person here who has faced an economic slow down before is me, when I was Finance Minister&#8221;. Hey! She&#8217;s cribbing Bob Rae&#8217;s talking points!<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:52 pm:<\/strong> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_10\">Marois<\/span>: &#8220;<em>It&#8217;s your responsibility as head of state<\/em>&#8230;&#8221;. I&#8217;m not sure that&#8217;s a good way to frame things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:06 pm:<\/strong> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_11\">Marois<\/span> and <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_12\">Dumont<\/span> go <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_13\">apeshit<\/span> over <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_14\">Charest<\/span> calling the early election again. Do they really want to make this their big issue?<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:13 pm:<\/strong> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_15\">btw<\/span>, interesting trivia bit. If and when <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_16\">Charest<\/span> wins, he&#8217;ll be the first Premier since <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_17\">Duplesis<\/span> to win back-to-back-to-back terms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:30 pm: <\/strong>Federalism! <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_18\">Woohoo<\/span>! Now it gets interesting!<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_19\">Marois<\/span> says the Quebec nation <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_20\">resolution<\/span> wasn&#8217;t enough. Gosh, who could have possibly foreseen that it <em>wouldn&#8217;t<\/em> satisfy the separatists?<\/p>\n<p>All three want more powers for Quebec. Maybe we should give it to them because I&#8217;m sure <strong>then<\/strong> the separatists will be satisfied, right?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_21\">Dumont<\/span>, for reasons only he knows, decides to bring up smoking and drugs. This annoys me, because there&#8217;s no Andre <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_22\">Boisclair<\/span> to crack jokes about. Get it? &#8220;Crack&#8221; jokes?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_23\">Charest<\/span> then delivers a fantastic sound byte where he lists everything he&#8217;s managed to soak down Ottawa for since he became Premier. It&#8217;s kind of depressing in one sense, but the man is absolutely winning this round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_24\">Charest<\/span> looked like a Premier. <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_25\">Marois<\/span> looked like an opposition leader. And <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_26\">Dumont<\/span> looked like some random guy who stumbled into the opposition leader&#8217;s seat by fluke. It might have played differently to a Quebec audience, but I give this one to <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_27\">Charest<\/span>, hands down.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;Quebec elections actually mattered?
