Today, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">Papineau<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p>The riding of <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">Papineau<\/span> is, appropriately enough, named after a political family &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biographi.ca\/009004-119.01-e.php?&amp;id_nbr=3592\">Joseph <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">Papineau<\/span> <\/a>and his son <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com\/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&amp;Params=A1ARTA0006069\">Louis-Joseph <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">Papineau<\/span><\/a>, famous for his <a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_L6NW1UySEKs\/SOFOXYqU2LI\/AAAAAAAAAoo\/KD54yBVTfs0\/s1600-h\/papineau.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251564804154644658\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_L6NW1UySEKs\/SOFOXYqU2LI\/AAAAAAAAAoo\/KD54yBVTfs0\/s200\/papineau.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>political leadership and trendy hairstyles (pictured here), which would later be mimicked by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobalist.com\/images\/bios\/pettigrew\/i170x240.jpg\">future <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\">Papineau<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\">MPs<\/span><\/a> as a tribute to Louis-Joseph. After engaging in protest, politics, and armed rebellion, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\">Papineau<\/span> helped found <em><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\">le<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_8\">parti<\/span> rouge<\/em>, a temporary ad <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_9\">hoc<\/span> rainbow coalition which initially opposed the Union of Canada but would later sit in a coalition government with the grits in 1858&#8230;for less than 1 day, as part of Canada&#8217;s shortest serving government ever (the government collapsed after Gilles <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_10\">Duceppe<\/span> changed his mind about running for its leadership).<\/p>\n<p>Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canadavotes\/riding\/082\/index.html\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_11\">Papineau<\/span> <\/a>is Canada&#8217;s smallest riding and it has the lowest average family income in Canada&#8230;which, on the bright side, means the voters there didn&#8217;t lose a ton of money today.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/punditsguide.ca\/riding_e.php?riding=1026\">2006 Results<\/a><\/strong><br \/>Vivian <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_12\">Bardot<\/span> (<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_13\">BQ<\/span>) 40.7%<br \/>Pierre <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_14\">Pettigrew<\/span> (Lib) 38.5%<br \/><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_15\">Mustaque<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_16\">Sarker<\/span> (<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_17\">CPC<\/span>) 8.3%<br \/>Marc <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_18\">Hasbani<\/span> (<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_19\">NDP<\/span>) 7.7%<br \/>Louis-Phillipe <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_20\">Verenka<\/span> (Green) 3.6%<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251577410089258770\" style=\"DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_L6NW1UySEKs\/SOFZ1JbWDxI\/AAAAAAAAAow\/GSOSQtXu0t0\/s320\/DuceppeTrudeau.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/><strong><u>2008 Candidates<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.presentpourlequebec.org\/Candidat.aspx?id=e9222a57-0fbf-454d-91c3-f23dcdaf6f71\"><strong>Vivian <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_21\">Barbot<\/span><\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>(<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_22\">BQ<\/span>): This 67 year old (pictured above challenging Justin Trudeau to a thumb war) was a busy rookie in the Bloc caucus as <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_23\">Duceppe&#8217;s<\/span> intergovernmental affairs minister. Her long and distinguished career began&#8230;oh, who am I kidding&#8230;OMG JUSTIN TRUDEAU IS RUNNING!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/justin.ca\/\"><strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>(Lib)<strong>: <\/strong>Trudeau was born Christmas Day 1971 and has been a political star ever since. He burst onto the Liberal Party scene at the last leadership convention when his well time endorsement of Gerard Kennedy <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_24\">catapulted<\/span> the then third place Kennedy all the way to&#8230;fourth place. Since that convention, every single female young Liberal in<a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_L6NW1UySEKs\/SOFeH0AkWuI\/AAAAAAAAApA\/RxiBGq2sem0\/s1600-h\/justin_trudeau.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251582128803830498\" style=\"FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_L6NW1UySEKs\/SOFeH0AkWuI\/AAAAAAAAApA\/RxiBGq2sem0\/s200\/justin_trudeau.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> the country has, at some time or another, had a picture of herself and Justin Trudeau as her <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_25\">facebook<\/span> profile pic. Trudeau captured the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_26\">Papineau<\/span> nomination in April of last year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, Trudeau married Sophie Gregoire and in 2007 the couple gave birth to their first son, Xavier Trudeau, already considered the <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_27\">frontrunner<\/span> in the 2054 Liberal leadership race (slogan: &#8220;<em>Mark an X for Xavier<\/em>&#8220;). Oh, and he&#8217;s also got a bit of an acting career on the side, playing yet another <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_28\">Papineau<\/span> &#8211; Talbot Mercer <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_29\">Papineau<\/span> &#8211; in an a CBC mini series. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mustaquesarker.ca\/EN\/4695\/\"><strong><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_30\">Mustaque<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_31\">Sarker<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_32\">CPC<\/span>): <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_33\">Mustaque<\/span> is looking to lose for the third straight time in <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_34\">Papineau<\/span>&#8230;someone should really tell him that the way to get into the Senate as a Quebec Conservative is not by running for the party repeatedly, but by <em>not<\/em> running.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/costazafiropoulos.ndp.ca\/en\"><strong>Costa <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_35\">Zafiropoulos<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_36\">NDP<\/span>)<strong>: <\/strong>Costa seems like a quality candidate, his one weakness being that he is <em>not<\/em> the son Canada&#8217;s most famous Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_37\">FLQ<\/span> Kids:<\/strong> The &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jeunespatriotes.org\/\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_38\">Jeune<\/span> Patriots<\/a>&#8221; are a group of separatists who have launched an &#8220;anybody but Trudeau movement&#8221; in this tight Liberal-Bloc riding. Their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canada.com\/vancouversun\/story.html?id=4640b351-3c79-4ac8-9046-72cde60d06e4\">official reason<\/a> for protesting is that Trudeau refuses to recognize <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_39\">Quebecers<\/span> as forming a nation&#8230;the same recognition that the Bloc Quebecois called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.presentpourlequebec.org\/bloc.aspx?bloc=44d228fa-77fb-45c0-a297-8d3cc396cc82\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_40\">un<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_41\">cadeaux<\/span> <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_42\">vide<\/span><\/a>&#8221; in their recent commercials. The leader of the Patriots <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canada.com\/vancouversun\/story.html?id=4640b351-3c79-4ac8-9046-72cde60d06e4\">recently told journalists<\/a> that if Trudeau (who they are working to defeat) won the seat, &#8220;it could even help our cause [of separatism]&#8221;, perhaps explaining why the separatist movement isn&#8217;t exactly the danger to Canada it once was&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Predictions:<\/strong> 79% of you who entered my <a href=\"http:\/\/calgarygrit.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/election-called-jump-into-pool.html\">election pool <\/a>predicted a Trudeau win in <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_43\">Papineau<\/span> and I tend to agree with that consensus. It&#8217;s certainly a riding well tailored for Justin and the kid is a tireless campaigner hell bent on earning his ticket to the show. It&#8217;s far too early to start talking about Trudeau for leadership but the Liberal caucus in Quebec could certainly use some fresh blood and Trudeau will provide just that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to part 2 of my 308 part series &#8211; better know a riding.
