In reply, Richardson said Canada has been too \u201csoft on crime\u201d by showing too much sympathy towards offenders and their civil rights. \u201cParticularly in big cities, we\u2019<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">ve<\/span> got people that have grown up in a different culture,\u201d said Richardson, 60. \u201cAnd they don\u2019t have the same background in terms of the stable communities we had 20, 30 years ago in our cities\u2026 and don\u2019t have the same respect for authority or people\u2019s person or property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later in the same interview, Richardson brought up the increase of immigrants coming to Canada. \u201cCanada accepts so many refugees, for example,\u201d he said. \u201cThese are people that have had a very difficult life from whence they came. If you\u2019<span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">ve<\/span> been in a refugee camp, then you live day-to-day. And those are troubled people. They come here and, well, it\u2019s easy to take advantage of people that are trying to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richardson added: \u201cTalk to the police. Look at who\u2019s committing these crimes. They\u2019re not the kid that grew up next door.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In fairness to the Tories, they have put out a <a href=\"http:\/\/network.nationalpost.com\/np\/blogs\/posted\/archive\/2008\/09\/25\/parties-trade-blows-over-tory-candidate-s-immigrant-crime-comments.aspx\">press release<\/a> with old quotes Keith Martin and Garth Turner made when they were Conservatives, in an effort to show that they are really a tolerant party&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Finally something to report out of Alberta this campaign!
