{"id":1702,"date":"2008-03-12T19:48:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-12T23:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=1702"},"modified":"2008-03-12T19:48:00","modified_gmt":"2008-03-12T23:48:00","slug":"democratic-peer-pressure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=1702","title":{"rendered":"Democratic Peer Pressure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The people at <a href=\"http:\/\/freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/11\/will-telling-on-your-neighbors-get-them-to-vote\/\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">freakonomics<\/span> <\/a>link to a detailed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apsanet.org\/imgtest\/APSRFeb08Gerberetal.pdf\">experiment <\/a>on voter turn-out rates in the United States. In this case study, it was found that increased amounts of social pressure will increase voting rates. Here were the voter turn-out rates for the different groups:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Control: 29.7%<\/strong><br \/><strong>Civic Duty: 31.5%<\/strong> (sent a pamphlet telling them it was their civic duty to vote)<br \/><strong>Hawthorne: 32.2%<\/strong> (got the same pamphlet and were told their turn-out rate was being studied)<br \/><strong>Self: 34.5%<\/strong> (pamphlet included a list of who in their own household had voted last election and were told that a list of who voted this time would be sent to them after the election)<br \/><strong>Neighbours: 37.8% <\/strong>(pamphlet included a list of who among their neighbours had voted last election and were told that a similar list would be distributed after the election)<\/p>\n<p>So, we can see that the fear of others knowing they weren&#8217;t voting increased voting turn out by 8.1%.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;m not sure public humiliation is <span class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">necessarily<\/span> the solution to voter apathy but in light of the 41% turn-out rate in Alberta, it certainly is interesting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The people at freakonomics link to a detailed experiment on voter turn-out rates in the United States.
