{"id":1651,"date":"2008-02-07T00:36:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-07T05:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=1651"},"modified":"2008-02-07T00:36:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-07T05:36:00","slug":"a-hail-mary-on-the-opening-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calgarygrit.ca\/?p=1651","title":{"rendered":"A Hail Mary on the Opening Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whenever the federal Liberals get desperate, they always drop the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sourceid=navclient&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;rlz=1T4GZHZ_enCA251&amp;q=abortion+%2b+%22stephen+harper%22\">A-bomb<\/a>. In Alberta, the equivalent is trying to blame a party that hasn&#8217;t held power since World War I for the NEP. As I said on <a href=\"http:\/\/calgarygrit.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/alberta-votes-2008.html\">Monday<\/a>, I fully expected Stelmach to roll out the &#8220;<em>Liberals boogah boogah<\/em>&#8221; arguments once he got desperate&#8230;I just didn&#8217;t expect that that would be on day 2. <a href=\"http:\/\/calsun.canoe.ca\/News\/Columnists\/Bell_Rick\/2008\/02\/06\/4830007-sun.php\">Eek<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">Yesterday, when Premier Ed, already stumbling through his performance, is faced with the pitch down the middle of the plate he swings wildly, hauling out the tried-and-true monster, the go-to ghoul, the federal National Energy Program of 28 years ago and Ed links this NEP to past Tory cuts, failing to mention massive Tory buffoonery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I lived through the 22% interest rates and part of that was the Liberal government that dumped the NEP on this province,&#8221; he says. Whatever.<\/p>\n<p>The rest is a ramble but the Coles Notes version is change, real change, change, change, change, change, change, plan, plan, change, change, change, change, change, change. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Good God, 100 years from now, Albertans are going to be telling their children to eat their vegetables or the NEP will come and kill them in their sleep. Or, at the very least, the PCs will be troting it out to try and win them a 36th consecutive term.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and for my Ontario readers, tired of Alberta news and looking for something closer to home, here&#8217;s some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpost.com\/sports\/story.html?id=288286\">local news <\/a>for you \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>UPDATE:<\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/communities.canada.com\/calgaryherald\/blogs\/firsttothepolls\/default.aspx\">Joel Kom<\/a>, at the Herald site, puts it better than I could:<\/p>\n<p><em>If you asked your kid, \u201cDid you steal a cookie from a cookie jar?\u201d and the answer you got was \u201cJimmy took two before I did,\u201d or, \u201cThat depends on what your definition of \u2018cookie\u2019 is,\u201d you\u2019d go crazy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It only took until the second day of the campaign \u2014 really, the campaign\u2019s first full day \u2014 to bring a similar answer.<\/em><br \/><em><\/em><br \/><em>[&#8230;]<\/em><br \/><em><\/em><br \/><em>You got a question on your health care track record and platform, and your answer was to blame a program by a federal government that is now almost three decades old.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The fact that government was Liberal is somehow supposed to reflect on Taft \u2014 even though it was almost 30 years ago and an entirely different level of government altogether.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s the equivalent of: \u201cI was there when we didn\u2019t have any cookies because the Saskatoon <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cookie_Monster\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cookie Monster<\/em><\/a><em> brought in the great chocolate chip shortage of \u201873.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Stelmach\u2019s evasiveness, on the second day of the campaign no less, not only does a disservice to voters across Alberta but to himself. By the time you finish reading his response, you start to wonder why he doesn&#8217;t want to simply answer the question head-on. Does he really understand the state of health care?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I&#8217;m sure voters aren\u2019t sitting in the emergency room or the clinic for three hours (or more) and thinking: \u201cThat darn federal program from the 1980s is responsible for this.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Any politician should expect to get questioned on his or her track record. Stelmach\u2019s non-answer is, at the least, thoroughly disappointing to any voter wanting to hear him discuss the performances of his government and others he has served in.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whenever the federal Liberals get desperate, they always drop the A-bomb.
