Today is one of those days.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure a lot of you are already aware of the growing popularity of <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">everyone&#8217;s<\/span><\/span> favourite stalking aid, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\">facebook<\/a><\/span><\/span>. A growing trend seems to be for politicians (or, more appropriately, 16 year old interns <em>pretending <\/em>to be their bosses) creating profiles on <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">facebook<\/span><\/span>. Because of this, people can become &#8220;friends&#8221; with the politicians, send them notes, etc.<\/p>\n<p>So, purely because I&#8217;m bored, I was curious to see which politicians have the most friends. Given that Stephen Harper and <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">Stephane<\/span><\/span> Dion both strike me as the anti-social type, it must be a surprise to both of them to see just how popular they really are:<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Harper: 511 friends<br \/><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\">Stephane<\/span><\/span> Dion: 1086 friends<\/p>\n<p>So, while he may not be polling as well, when it comes to virtual friends who have never met him, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\">Stephane<\/span><\/span> is <em>way <\/em>more popular than Steve. <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\">Ohh<\/span><\/span>&#8230;and <em>least <\/em>surprising of all:<\/p>\n<p>Jack Layton: 8 friends<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\">Geez<\/span><\/span> Jack &#8211; I know getting results for people takes a lot of time, but save a bit for your friends too.<\/p>\n<p>Other notables:<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Taft: 170 friends<br \/>Ed <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_8\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_8\">Stelmach<\/span><\/span>: No profiles, but 29 people in the &#8220;Ed <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_9\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_9\">Stelmach<\/span><\/span> fan club&#8221;<br \/>Michael <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_10\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_10\">Ignatieff<\/span><\/span>: 1583 friends <em>(obviously not enough of them were delegates)<\/em><br \/>Peter <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_11\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_11\">MacKay<\/span><\/span>: No profile, but 7 members in the Peter <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_12\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_12\">MacKay<\/span><\/span> fan club.<br \/>Dalton <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_13\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_13\">McGuinty<\/span><\/span>: 17 members in the &#8220;Dalton <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_14\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_14\">McGuinty<\/span><\/span> is handsome&#8221; club.<br \/>Hillary Clinton: No profile but over <em>500 groups <\/em>devoted to her, including &#8220;<em>Don&#8217;t let a woman become President&#8230;especially Hillary Clinton<\/em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em>Don&#8217;t support Hillary Clinton, support Chris <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_15\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_15\">Dodd<\/span><\/span><\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Other fun groups:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Paul Wells Appreciation Society&#8221; [39 members]<br \/>&#8220;The Andrew <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_16\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_16\">Coyne<\/span><\/span> Fan Club&#8221; [119 members]<br \/>&#8220;I miss making fun of Jean Chretien&#8221; [78 members]<br \/><em>Two groups called <\/em>&#8220;Stephen Harper eats babies&#8221;<br \/>&#8220;Stephen Harper needs a stylist&#8221; [26 members]<br \/>&#8220;Stephen Harper is a <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_17\"><span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_17\">cylon<\/span><\/span>&#8221; [23 members]<br \/>&#8220;Jack Layton lives on my street&#8221; [1 member]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the good things about blogs, is that you don&#8217;t always have to be serious and can descend into what I like to call &#8220;Jane Taber journalism&#8221; every now and then when the mood strikes.
