“Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine. But no, do I, am I an addict? No. Have I tried it? Probably in one of my drunken stupors.”

  1. For some reason he and others are still pushing for the release of the video, even though, with this admission to the only thing that seeing the video would possibly allow you to contest (i.e., whether it’s him and he’s actually doing crack), I can’t see why it would be relevant.

    • It’s relevant because the crack smoking thing is forgivable, and the crack issue keeps the other issues – drunk at work, drunk at official events, not working, misusing city resources, connections to shady people, criminal elements, no consequences for any of his misdeeds, etc – off the front pages.

Crack doesn’t help his narrative (although it does continue to paint the ultimate moneyed insider as the outsider he wishes to be…) but the other things eat away at his narrative. Those are the things that could stop him from being re-elected.

  2. “Yes, I have voted for Rob Ford. But no, do I, am I a fan? No. Have I voted for him? Probably in one of my drunken stupors.”

  3. Seriously amazing quote. “…in one of my drunken stupors.” As though drunken black-out stupors are an ordinary part of the lives of 44 year-old parents who also happen to be the mayor of the largest city in a G8 country. You can’t make this up.

On a related note, as someone who would never vote for Rob Ford (if I lived in Toronto), I could easily see forgiven him if he admitted his deeds when the allegations first surfaced. But now? After denying and essentially lying for a half year and sending out hired goons to expunge the video from existence by trading a pound of weed for it? Sort of hard to imagine anyone stomaching his apology now… And yet, why do I get the feeling that he could still get re-elected.

  4. I just… what? What the what?

I’m even more amazed that this admission apparently doesn’t mean that the police can arrest him. But then, Boisclair admitted to snorting cocaine and wasn’t arrested, so I shouldn’t be surprised…
