‘It’s normal’ for Tory ridings to get more federal cash, Larry Smith says

Federal money naturally flows to ridings represented by the governing party, according to the star Conservative candidate in the western suburbs of Montreal.

Larry Smith, the former football player and CFL executive who briefly served as senator before the election call, says major funding follows Tory MPs.

Pictures from the Campaign Trail

Last night, I posted pictures of Michael Ignatieff humanizing himself to voters. After all, what voters look for in a Prime Minister is someone who knows how to eat a hot dog.

Today, a look at how Stephen Harper has spent the first dozen days of the campaign.

Harper plays piano with a little girl. I know what you’re thinking, but there’s no need to worry for his safety – she has never met Michael Ignatieff.

You can still win a free coffee with “roll up the rim”…but from now on, you will be unable to claim it until Canada is out of deficit in 2015.

Afterwards, Stephen Harper thanked the Maple Leafs for not plunging Toronto into an unecesary and unwanted playoff campaign, which would have risked Canada’s economic recovery.

Harper thanks the Tory war room staffers for their hard work.

Even Stephen Harper has started playing the coalition drinking game!

Harper, fed up with media questions, decides to solve the problem.

The Humanization of Michael Ignatieff

Last election, the Tory strategy was to show the softer side of Steve – Harper was Mr. Sweater Vest at campaign rallies and on TV.

This time, the tactic has changed – everywhere you go, Harper is in a suit. The man was even wearing dress pants for his pick-up game of street hockey. After all, these are serious times and nothing risks the economic recovery more than indulging in casual wear.

On the flip side, the Liberals have gone all out to humanize Michael Ignatieff. See Mike eat a hot dog. See Mike wear a tool belt. Tonight, the media are invited to watch Mike watching American Idol.

A look back at Harper’s time in power, through the eyes of the lamestream left-wing media.

Because, you know, if he mentions that he’s the founder of a “White Rights” organization, you might want to do a background check:

Ignatieff condemns aboriginal comments by Quebec Liberal

COMPTON, QUE.—Michael Ignatieff has condemned reported comments by a Quebec Liberal questioning the work ethic of aboriginals and branding them “featherheads.”

Ignatieff said he has an ordered an investigation into the comments by André Forbes, the party’s flag-bearer in Manicouagan and promised “decisive” action, perhaps by the end of Wednesday.

Ad Watch: My name is Steve and I AM CANADIAN

The Conservatives roll out positive ads that tout, among other things, the role Stephen Harper played in winning World War 2 and the Summit Series.

It is, without a doubt, the most cliche-filled ad to ever grace the airwaves, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work. It will make Canadians feel good about themselves and, by extension, Harper. Having the “courageous warrior and compassionate neighbour” line play as Harper is shown on screen is a nice touch.

The Liberal Platform

Posted on by CalgaryGrit in 2011 Federal Election, Federal Politics, Policy | Leave a comment

The Liberal launched their platform online Sunday. It’s an impressive document that uses the word “Family” 96 times in it. And while the Family Pack will be the policies that get the most attention, what caught my eye was the Democratic Reform section.

Back in 2006, the GST cut grabbed the most headlines, but I’m still convinced the Accountability Act was Harper’s most important platform plank. That’s because it gave him the right to speak on the corruption issue and showed his government would be different (ha ha ha!). Until then, he was just an angry guy throwing stones. The Accountability Act gave him real credibility on the ethics issue and gave voters fed up with Adscam a reason to vote for him, not just a reason to vote against the Liberals.

While the Liberals have taken great joy in pointing out the many reasons to vote against the Tories on the ethics file, they have yet to offer much of an alternative. So, with the platform launched, let’s see what they’re promising:

1. A more open government: All access to information requests will be posted online and a new website will let Canadians search for financial information on grants, contributions, and contracts. Oh, and the long form Census will be coming back.

2. Reforming Parliament: Many of Michael Chong’s thoughtful QP reforms have been lifted. In addition, the Liberals are promising regular face-to-face meetings between the party leaders, limits on the PM’s power to prorogue, and a People’s Question Period. All good policies.

3. Modernizing the Voting System: A pilot program to try out online voting for soldiers, students, and all those other unpatriotic Canadians living outside the country.

All of these are good proposals. They’re not sexy, so it really comes down to how they’re packaged and how heavily they’re sold. If the Liberals do try to turn up the heat on Harper over ethics, I hope they highlight this alternative to combat the perception out there that all parties are the same.

Wisdom of the Crowds: Ads & Polls

At the start of the campaign, I asked 20 questions. I’ve already recapped some of your answers here and here.

Today, a look at what you expect from to see on the tube and in the polls:

Which polling company’s publicly released final numbers will be closest to the actual results?

Survey says…Nanos 44%, Ekos 25%, Ipsos Reid 13%, Angus Reid 13%, Deicima 4%, Environics 2%. For my shot in the dark prediction, I’ll got with one nobody picked and say Leger, who have been very good in recent elections.

Over/under on the highest level of support the Conservatives will hit in a national election poll – 42%

Thanks to the Sunday night Nanos numbers, the overs have it.

Will the Liberals ever lead in a national election poll?

One-in-four (25%) say they will. It wouldn’t surprise me – even Dion came within 3 points on a Nanos poll last election.

Which party will run the most vicious attack ad?

Surprise, surprise, 73% of you picked the Conservatives. Still, I gave the NDP the win in this category last time. I’m going to go for the long-shot and say the Bloc take it this time. Duceppe hasn’t held back in his criticism of Harper, so I don’t see why his commercials would.

Which party will run the “best” ad?

The NDP (51%) and the Grits (31%) got the most votes. A few of you picked the Liberals saying Calgary Grit readers would stack the box in their favour. Well, keep in mind two NDP ads and a Tory ad sat on the podium last time.

Ad Content

One-in-three (33%) expect an abortion ad, with even fewer expecting to see Harper’s sweater vest (29%) or a Tory Cabinet Minister (21%).
